If you're just getting into fishing with Dana Wharf Lady Anglers, choosing your first rod and reel combo can feel overwhelming. With so many options, it's easy to over- or under-gear yourself. But don’t worry—we’ve got your back.

Spinning vs. Conventional Reels
Spinning Reels are great for beginners. They’re lightweight, easy to cast, and perfect for inshore species like bass or bonito.
Conventional Reels, on the other hand, offer more power and line capacity, making them ideal for deeper waters and larger species like yellowtail or tuna. These take a bit more practice, especially when it comes to preventing backlash.
Rod Length & Power
A good rule of thumb:
Shorter rods (6-7 ft) = more control, better for jigging
Longer rods (7-8+ ft) = more casting distance
As for power:
Medium is a solid all-around choice for most Dana Wharf trips.
Heavy is ideal when you’re targeting big fighters or fishing deep.
Lady Angler Pro Tips
“I always tell new members to keep it simple—one quality spinning setup is all you need to start. You’ll know when it’s time to upgrade,” says DWLA veteran Trish H.
Bottom line: Choose gear that fits your fishing style, not just what looks cool. And never be afraid to ask the crew for advice before casting off.
